About Charlotte

Kia ora! My name is Charlotte Scott and my goal in life is to make the world a little bit more beautiful through fabric and stitch.

I live in New Zealand, also known as Aotearoa, the land of the long white cloud. I was born and raised on the Kapiti Coast, but moved to Northland more than 20 years ago, and it truly feels like home here.

I began working with textiles more than 17 years ago when I decided to make a quilt for my newborn son. It quickly led to a love affair with fabric and colour and I haven’t stopped stitching since.

My artwork depicts narratives of the natural world and my medium is cloth, needle and thread.  I am deeply inspired by the unique culture, flora and fauna of Aotearoa and by trying to capture the distinctive colours we have surrounding us.

My work often features imagery of New Zealand’s birds. You could call me a bit of a bird nerd! Aotearoa evolved as an isolated island, with only two native land mammals (the short and long-tailed bat), so we are a land of birdsong.

I colour my own cloth, either with dye or paint, then I cut, layer and quilt my work, using the texture of the quilting stitches as an integral element of the final design.

I also dye fabric and thread to sell. I love to see other people find creative ways to use my little pieces of colour.

More recently, my journey has been towards sustainability in textile art. I have begun rescuing unwanted clothing and linens and giving them a new lease on life with dye. These fabrics provide subtle secondary textures that I find enriches the surface of a quilt.

I am also a teacher, speaker and author and will happily travel to spread the joy of working and creating with textiles.
